Aston Villa vs Liverpool Betting Preview

Liverpool travel to Villa Park on Sunday in need of three points, made even more urgent with Arsenal and Everton both winning their matches to take another step closer to European football. Villa need victory for a different reason all together. They sit in 18 th following Wigan's win on Saturday but could leapfrog both Wigan and Sunderland if they can do the double over Liverpool for the first time since the inaugural Premier League season in 1992/93.

Aston Villa's Recent Results:

Aston Villa 3-2 QPR ( Agbonlahor, Benteke, Weimann ) Reading 1-2 Aston Villa ( Benteke, Agbonlahor ) Aston Villa 0-1 Man City Arsenal 2-1 Aston Villa ( Weimann )

Aston Villa have seen somewhat of a resurgence in the last couple of weeks with big wins against fellow relegation candidates Reading and QPR. Now they face the possibility of winning three straight games in the Premier League for the first time since April 2010, a feat they achieved after they beat Liverpool 3-1 at Anfield, as they did earlier this season.

With eight games remaining Villa are ten points shy of the notorious 40 point barrier that many consider to be safety. With the unpredictable nature of this season, however, they may need more and will have to do so against Manchester United and Chelsea, as well as key matches against Sunderland, Norwich and Wigan on the final day.

Villa's good form has come about because of the great attacking presence of both Christian Benteke and Andreas Weimann, a pair that have scored 28 goals between them in all competitions. Returning to form in the previous two games is Agbonlahor, who will be hoping to reach double figures in goals for the first time since the 2009/10 season. Benteke is just four goals shy of Dwight York's club record of 17 Premier League goals in a season and is 9/4 to score anytime with Blue Square.

Liverpool's Recent Results:

Southampton 3-1 Liverpool ( Coutinho ) Liverpool 3-2 Tottenham ( Suarez, Downing, Gerrard (pen) ) Wigan 0-4 Liverpool ( Downing, Suarez (x3) ) Liverpool 3-1 Zenit St. Petersburg ( Suarez (x2), Allen )

Liverpool looked to be mounting a serious battle for fifth place following wins over Wigan and Tottenham but stumbled away to Southampton before the international break. Now they are under pressure to win with Everton and Arsenal threatening to pull away.

Despite Liverpool's exit from the Europa League after an impressive second leg fight back against Zenit, Brendan Rodgers has brought some hope back to Anfield having managed to get the players to play as a unit with the attacking flair and passing movement we had been used to seeing from former Liverpool teams.

Whilst Luis Suarez has captured all the headlines this season, it is the arrival of young Brazilian Philippe Coutinho in the January transfer window that has sparked new life into the Liverpool dressing room. He scored on his first start at the club and bagged his second in the loss to Southampton. It has been his vision in front of goal, as well as his neat footwork and entertaining tricks, that has impressed many, and two assists against Wigan proved his ability to create goals for others. He is 10/1 to set up the first goal of the game on Sunday with Boylesports.

From their last ten meetings Liverpool have won four, Aston Villa have won three and there have been three draws. 26 goals have been scored between the two teams and on six occasions only one team has found the net. Aston Villa have conceded first in all of their last four games, making Liverpool to score first at 11/20 with Ladbrokes a solid bet .

Villa have picked up three cards in each of their two wins this month whilst Liverpool have had just one in each of their last two games. With Liverpool expected to make most of the running, not to mention the quick feet of Coutinho and Suarez, Villa are likely to pick up the most fouls and are a good price at 5/4 to pick up the most bookings with Blue Square .

Suarez has been brought down in the box more times than any other player in the Premier League this season. A penalty to be awarded in the game is 3/1 with William Hill whilst Suarez to pick up a yellow for a second game in a row is 4/1 with Sky Bet .

This will be a hotly contested match and could well be a tense affair in the opening half. As it opens up in the second Liverpool should be able to take advantage, having been able to convert chances on a more consistent basis since Christmas. Villa have only beaten Liverpool at home once since 1998 and could fall victim to a backlash from Liverpool's defeat to Southampton a couple of weeks ago.

Prediction: Aston Villa 1-3 Liverpool - Best priced at 14/1 with Bet Victor and Stan James .
